The melon: summer fruit par excellence

Melon coupé

The melon, with its juicy and sweet flesh, is a symbol of summer meals. Appreciated for its freshness and delicate taste, it is a must on the tables in summer, whether as a starter, dessert or even as a drink.

History and origins of the melon

The melon is native to Africa or Asia, where it has been cultivated for thousands of years. He has traveled through the centuries and civilizations, integrating himself with various gastronomic cultures. The Egyptians already appreciated it, as evidenced by the drawings found in the Pharaonic tombs.

In Europe, the melon was introduced by the Romans. It became particularly popular in France in the seventeenth century, especially during the reign of Louis XIV, who had it cultivated in the gardens of Versailles. Today, the main melon-producing regions in France are Provence, Languedoc, and the South-West.

Where can I find melons?

Melon is a seasonal fruit, available mainly from June to September in France. It can be easily found in the markets, in supermarkets and directly from local producers. Among the best known varieties, we find the melon charentais with its orange flesh and sweet taste, and the melon Galia, greener and slightly spicy.

The benefits of melon

Melon is rich in water (90%), which makes it an excellent moisturizing fruit for the summer. It is also a good source of vitamins A and C, potassium and fiber. Vitamin A contributes to healthy skin and good vision, while vitamin C boosts the immune system. Low in calories, it is ideal for those who wish to treat themselves without feeling guilty.

How to cook melon

Melon can be enjoyed in many ways, whether as a main course or as a side dish :

  • Plain or in salad : Cut it into slices or dice, and serve it simply, or in a salad with Parma ham, basil and a drizzle of olive oil.
  • In skewers : For an original aperitif, alternate pieces of melon with fresh cheese or mozzarella balls on wooden picks.
  • In cold soup : Mix melon with a little mint, lemon juice and serve chilled as a starter or dessert.
  • In sorbet : Prepare a homemade sorbet by mixing the melon flesh with a little sugar and lemon juice, then let it set in the freezer.
